Twenty-seven galleries and exhibitors are showcasing 88 artists from 16 countries at the Sofia Art Fair—Bulgaria’s largest contemporary art exhibition, drawing enthusiasts from across Europe. The event is being opened by Minister of Culture Evtim Miloshev and Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev.
The third Sofia Art Fair begins today—an international contemporary art exhibition bringing together artists, galleries, collectors, and the public from Bulgaria and abroad at Sofia Tech Park until October 11. Even before the official opening, artworks with a total value exceeding €100,000 have already been sold to Bulgarian collectors, while contemporary art enthusiasts from several European countries have purchased tickets and are traveling specifically for the event.
Among the acquired pieces is one of the standout works of this year’s edition: the installation known as “Clouds” by the world-renowned Argentine artist Tomás Saraceno, presented by the Italian gallery Pinksummer (Genoa). Visitors will be able to view this aerial structure—inspired by the architecture of spiderwebs—in Pavilion 11 of the exhibition.
Also among the works generating the most public interest are previously unseen pieces by Christo and Jeanne-Claude, presented by DG Art Gallery in Pavilion 6. These include what is expected to be the exhibition’s most expensive work—an original piece by Christo Javacheff. This year’s edition has attracted record interest from diplomatic missions in Bulgaria. The fair will be visited by representatives from the embassies of France, the Netherlands, Georgia, Greece, and Turkey, as well as the Czech and Polish cultural institutes and the chambers of commerce of Turkey and France. Tickets are also being purchased by contemporary art enthusiasts from Spain, Italy, Switzerland, and Austria, who are traveling to Sofia specifically for the Sofia Art Fair.
“In addition to the inspiring international interest, guided tours have been booked for over 100 children,” says Suni Danadji, the main organizer of the Sofia Art Fair. “This is unprecedented and has been the most delightful surprise of this edition for us. We want to give our young audience the opportunity to engage with the artworks, ask questions, and discover the diverse forms and ideas of contemporary art.”
Minister of Culture Evtim Miloshev and Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev will attend the official opening today.
The third edition of the Sofia Art Fair features 27 galleries and exhibitors from eight countries, showcasing works by 88 artists from 16 nations. Visitors will be able to view paintings, sculptures, photography, installations, video art, and digital and interdisciplinary works.
From October 9 to 11, the parallel program “SAF Talks” will offer visitors the chance to meet artists, curators, collectors, and international experts. The discussions will focus on building collections, supporting artists, the role of art fairs, and the relationship between artworks and the public. Speakers include Vladimir Yavachev, Georgi Toshev, Lachezar Boyadzhiev, and Guillaume Piens (Director of the Paris-based contemporary art fair Art Paris), alongside other international speakers from France, the Netherlands, and Austria, as well as Bulgarian collectors, gallerists, and experts.
