After completing his studies in art history and working as an organizer and artistic director of cultural events, Guillaume Piens joined the FIAC team in 2000, remaining there until 2006. He subsequently continued his career at Paris Photo, serving as its director from 2008 to February 2011.

After leaving Paris Photo, he founded his own cultural event production company, Culture Squad Communication. Alongside other professional engagements, he served as an artistic advisor for the Photo Saint Germain des Prés festival between 2011 and 2013.

Since May 2011, he has been the director of Art Paris—a leading spring event at the Grand Palais in Paris dedicated to modern and contemporary art. He is also a jury member for the Prix Camera Clara, an award presented to photographers working with large-format cameras.
